What is Involved in a Vacuum Tune-up and a Sewing Machine Tune-up?

Buying a new sewing machine or vacuum cleaner is an investment that can set you back a serious amount of cash. Sometimes they come with short term warranties, but after they expire, you will be responsible for repair or replacement costs. If you regularly maintain these devices, it will help assure that you get the most out of them as they age and perhaps even increase their lifespan.

Vacuum Tune-Ups
Vacuum manufacturers typically recommend routine maintenance that you can and should carry out on your own according to the user’s manual. In addition to this, vacuums should be serviced by a professional every 12-months to extend the life of the motor and other parts.  Some signs indicating that your vacuum is in need of professional servicing include lack of power, a loss of suction, loud or strange noises or vibrations, unusual or burning smells, and excessive heat.

Typically a vacuum tune-up includes the following services:

  • Check the motor
  • Test the airways and suction performance
  • Check and clean brush roll
  • Check and replace the belt as needed
  • Clean internally and externally

Sewing Machine Tune-Ups
Sewing machines can be delicate and complicated devices. However, with some loving care and attention, yours will sew better, need fewer repairs, and should last much longer.

One thing you can do on your own to maintain your sewing machine includes using only a good needle and thread. Lint from cheap thread can be bad for sewing machines, and of course, dull or bent needles will not do the trick. Changing out your needle around every 10 hours (of actual sewing) will help avoid skipped stitches, and will make the experience more enjoyable. Also be sure to clean your sewing machine frequently. Older machines needed to be lubricated with good quality sewing machine oil every 3 to 6 months, but the newer electronic machines are not to be oiled but lubricated with special products and need to be done only by a qualified technician.

Like vacuums, sewing machines should be professionally serviced annually to take care of the following issues:
  • Check upper and lower thread paths
  • Replace needles as needed
  • Check timing and needle position
  • Check feed
  • Set tensions
  • Clean externally
  • Clean and lubricate internally (those areas that you can’t get to)
  • Stitch out a test pattern
