Upcycle Project Inspiration

Fashion isn’t always as pretty as it seems. The industry on its own creates up to $92 million tons of waste each year. 20 percent of wastewater comes from the fashion industry, as well as, 10 percent of the global carbon emissions beings released into the air. This destroys the air we breathe and living creatures in bodies of water. Lead, mercury, and arsenic all get released into the ocean in large quantities, hurting the aquatic creatures below. On top of that, “fast fashion” brands create loads and loads of waste, just to create poor quality and cheap clothing that doesn’t last more than a couple uses if it even gets purchased.

As you can see, the fashion industry isn’t all glitter and beauty, However, doing what you can to thrift, upcycle, and create with second-hand clothing can help save the fashion industry from this corporate fire it’s involved with. Read below to learn how to start Refashioning and upcycle old clothes!

5 Ways To Refashion

  1. Make a Blanket: Stop what you’re doing and don’t throw away those old t-shirts! Collect your old high-school t’s and make a memorable blanket with them. This is a great way to hold on to those memory-filled t’s, without having to put them in your dresser or, worse, throw them away. Don’t contribute to the waste the fashion industry already has caused. Do what a true fashionista would do, create.
  2. Refashion Denim: Sometimes old clothes just don’t cut it for the new trends. A new pair of jeans can be expensive, so grab an old pair and start designing! A stripe down the leg or a fashionable rip in the knee holes can give those old jeans a whole new look. Make lines on the pant of where you want a hole, cut the ends, and leave it. Then, use your washer and dryer to create a frayed, more realistic look.
  3. Fashion Patches: Whether it’s a hole or a bleach stain that won’t come out, you can sow a stunning patch to give those pants or blouse a new life. Patches can be uniquely you and can turn any pair of clothing into something that truly represents who you are/.
  4. Embroider: Write your name, sow a bee, make a snake, there are so many options with it comes to sowing on embroidery. Embroidery is a great way to write a message on a shirt. For example, make a matching embroidery for you and your best friend!
  5. Skirts: Stop at your local Goodwill or even your own closet, and grab a large pair of old pants! A large pair of jeans can turn into an authentic denim skirt. This goes for other pant materials, as well! Now, you don’t have to spend 100’s of dollars on work clothes!
