Vacuum Repairs and Tune-Ups Before Spring Cleaning

The beginning of spring means new life, warm weather, and spring cleaning. If you or your loved ones suffer from springtime allergies, keeping your home clean at the start and throughout the spring is integral to housekeeping. Whether you like it or not, your vacuum will be your best friend during the spring to keep your home clean and allergen-free. That’s why ensuring your vacuum is in top shape to take on the season is essential.

Before you start your spring cleaning, taking your vacuum in for a quick check-up may be worthwhile to ensure your machine can handle the spring cleaning. Consider having some of these vacuum repairs and tune-ups:

  • Clean Attachments. After each use of the vacuum, carefully unplug or turn off the machine and remove the attachments and heads. Thoroughly clean each attachment with a damp cloth and a light detergent to remove any dirt or dust collected inside. Use the vacuum to clean rug and floor attachments, which may require more elbow grease than just a damp cloth.
  • Check for Blockages. Vacuuming can cause some unexpected blockages inside the machine, so it’s crucial that you check and remove them to ensure your vacuum is cleaning effectively. Inspect the wand, hose, and intake and exhaust ports of any obstructions and carefully remove them. This also includes any threads or fibers that may have wound along the beater bar—use scissors to carefully cut them out.
  • Clean the Filter. Once you’ve vacuumed and emptied the bin, make sure you’re cleaning the filter after each use of the machine. Most machines will allow you to remove the filter, rinse it clean, and continue reusing it. Replace any filters that are torn or dirty beyond repair.
  • Replace the Belt. The motor belt of a vacuum connects to the brush roller and helps it collect the dust and debris you’re vacuuming over, making it an essential piece of your machine. If you’ve noticed that you need to go over parts several times to get them clean, it may indicate that you need to replace the belt.
  • See a Professional. Take your vacuum cleaner to a professional every 2-3 years for a formal inspection and cleaning. They’ll be able to perform any major repairs you may need. It may seem unnecessary, but remember, the more you care for your vacuum, the longer it will last. Well-kept vacuums can last 20+ years!
