Simple Sewing Hacks

Sewing machine and accessories available at Friendly Stitches

Whether you’re a professional seamstress or an amateur sewing fanatic, sewing well can be pretty hard sometimes. That’s why it’s great to have a few sewing hacks in your pocket to make sewing just a little bit easier! Though you may think sewing hacks are most helpful for those working on larger sewing projects, the truth is we can all use these tips to help us fix a torn hem on a cocktail dress or a rip in our favorite tops. These tips will bring you great results in no time at all!

Take a look at some of these simple sewing hacks so you’re prepared the next time you’re sewing:

  • Keep Your Scissors Sharp. Dull scissors are one of the worst things you can have when sewing, so it’s crucial that you do everything to keep your scissors nice and sharp. Designate one pair of scissors specifically for cutting fabric, and do NOT use them on paper, as this will immediately dull them. We recommend tying a ribbon around your fabric scissors so you know which ones to set aside. Need help sharpening your scissors? Take some tin foil and start cutting it up. This will sharpen your scissors very quickly!

  • Use Tape or Rubber Bands for Straight Lines. Say goodbye to crooked hems! Place a rubber band around the arm of your sewing machine to help keep your lines as straight as possible. We have a variety of tools to help you stay on track as you sew.

  • Flat Iron Between Buttons. Use a flat iron for small areas, like the space between buttons, to help get out wrinkles. This will help you make sure you’re sewing in exact places without wrinkles getting in the way. Use it when traveling or for other spots that an iron won’t fit.

  • Use Hairspray to Help Thread the Needle. Threading a needle is one of the hardest parts of sewing, and it’s at the very start of the process! Spray the end of your thread with some hairspray to help keep the thread perfectly straight. This will ensure it glides right through the needle hole.

  • Pick Up Loose Needles and Pins with Magnets. Dropped pins and needles are unfortunately a common occurrence when sewing. To avoid stepping on sharp pins and needles, keep a magnet around to help attract any loose needles and pins that may be invisible on your table, workspace, and floor.
