Fun Projects for Summer and Back to School

Summer vacation is finally here, and parents everywhere are asking one question: how will I entertain my kids?! With the time away from school, planning a fun-filled summer for your kids can be a challenge for anyone. One thing that kids of all ages love? Art projects! Take out your favorite fabrics and sewing kits and start making fun, colorful, and useful sewing projects that will take your kids from summer to school.

Here are some of our favorite projects for summer and back to school:
  • Drawstring Backpacks. A drawstring backpack is one of the most useful and surprisingly easy things your kids can make this summer. Take it to the pool or the beach during the summer, then straight to soccer practice during the school year to carry those extra materials your kids always seem to forget. Spice it up with different colors and fabrics, and even monogram it to make it individual. Use this template to help guide your steps.
  • Pencil Cases. Use the extra fabric from your backpacks to make your own pencil cases! Make it match your backpack or use your imagination to create a distinctive look with the same materials. This template is easy and extremely kid friendly. Don’t have any supplies for your case yet? Use it during the summer as a sunglasses case!
  • Hair Ties. Scrunchies are BACK, and they’re not going anywhere! You and your child will surely be the most stylish duo when it’s time to return to school. Not to mention how useful a scrunchie is to keep you cool during the hot summer weather! All you need is basic sewing materials, a little fabric, and elastic. Here’s an easy DIY guide to help you make your own.
  • iPad Case. Is your little one taking an iPad to and from school? Or using it to entertain themselves on those long summer road trips? Then make a useful iPad carrying case to keep it safe! Like everything else on this list, this case is relatively easy to make yet customizable, so kids can truly let their creativity run wild. Follow this step-by-step tutorial to make your own iPad case.
  • Keychains. Make any keyring or backpack fun with a homemade keychain! Keychains are easy ways to let your kids use their imagination with leftover fabric and art materials you may have, and with so many tutorials available, you can make whatever kind of keychain you wish. In the spirit of summer (and our favorite warm weather treat), we recommend these delightful felt ball ice cream keychains.
